Sent to Alaska to cover the whale rescue for Japanese television, TOM ROSE spent ten days in Barrow, most of it over an ice hole in the Chukchi Sea, observing and recording every aspect of the story. Before writing Freeing the Whales, he returned to Alaska to interview all of the major players involved in the adventure. Trained at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Rose has reported firsthand on the unrest in South Africa, the 1986 Philippine revolution, and, most recently, the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. He is a native of Indianapolis. This is his first book.
