In his 36 years Mr. Deighton has done a bit of everything, from teaching school in Brittany to writing a syndicated column on cooking. He has traveled the world, has seen a hurricane in New York, a typhoon in Tokyo, vista vision blue movies in pre-Castro Cuba. Among his friends are gold smugglers from Bangkok and an Iron Curtain military attache. He has fallen into Hong Kong harbor, been among the crew of an airliner on fire and "been sick with fear on a not very tall building."
