Sidonie was born in 1873 and her writing career was launched at the age of twenty-seven, with the publication Claudine at School. Critics agree that The Vagabond, Gigi, Cheri, The Last of Cheri, and The Claudine novels are among her finest works. Colette died in 1954, honored in her native France and throughout the world. Among her countrymen, her place in twentieth-century fiction is comparable to that of Proust.
