The Downeys were among the leading
professional portrait photographer of the late 19th Century, with studios in
Ebury Street, London and Newcastle-on-Tyne. They were renowned both for their
cabinet portraits and their carte-de-visites, of which they produced the most
popular of all time, a remarkably informal pose for the period, with Princess
Alexandra carrying her baby daughter over her back. Formal portraits of Disraeli
and Lily Langtrey have the same sense of their famous subjects having been taken
as if unawares.
